Knowledge is power! We are learning how our lungs, heart and brain are working so we know what tobacco, alcohol and drugs can do to our bodies. We are practicing way to refuse these items, and also learning of the laws associated with them. I tell every class that I'm sure it's ok with their parents that they blame you as their reason for refusing; "My parents would ground me forever; I"ll be punished until I'm 50!". We are also discussussing how medications can become dangerous if taken incorrectly. Please speak to your children about these topics! Please feel free to contact me at any time if I can be of assistance!
Did you know the "Food Pyramid" was replaced with "MyPlate" in June of 2011? We're discussing the differences and similarities of the two, and reviewing what a balanced and healthy meal looks like. MyPlate.gov is the USDA's website (that also has archived Food Pyramid information) that has games and lots of info. Check it out!
Some of us know what to look for. If a letter comes home from your child's class stating a student has lice, do you know what to look for? We discussed how lice travels and is spread, and ways it is treated. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Nurse Twitchell. She'll be happy to talk to you!
In 3rd and 4th grade, we've been discussing relationships, anger and ways to communicate. We discussed using "I-Messages" to own and take responsibility for our feelings when talking with someone. Practice these at home! When sharing feelings with "I-Messages", one is less likely be deffensive or feel attacked. We also did activities to show that we don't communicate the same. Oh, how our drawings turned out (ask your 4th graders!).

How did that bitter sweet chocolate taste? Things don't always taste as we think they might, but we learned this in second grade! Ask your children about our taste test and our smelling test. First grade will continue working on the five senses.
Third and Fourth grade will continue with EMOTIONS. We're discuss conflict resolution and how to manage our own emotions. (Remember: Anger is ok, but what matters is what you do with it!).
Parents, please feel free to call or contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
As we begin our new year in Wellness, we'll be revisiting goals we set for the year.
Kindergarten, First, and Second graders will be doing DIBELs testing during their Wellness classes the cycle of 4 JAN - 11 JAN.
First through fourth will begin discussing germs, our bodies, the five senses, and nutrition in the coming weeks.
First and second grade: We will be tasting sour, sweet, salty, and bitter food items while discussing the sense of taste. Please let me know if you wish your child not participate in our tasting exercise. We will be tasting lemons, syrup, salty pretzels and bitter chocolate. Please let me know about allergies. (I'll also be checking with Nurse Twitchell). Thank you.

As we end November and head into December, we're addressing our role in the community and family. Students will see themselves as individuals and members of diverse local and global communities. This discussion will guide us into the different beleifs we share as the holidays arrive.
October is Fire Safety Month! We've been addressing fire safety topics from home fire hazards to fire escape plans. Please check your smoke detector and let your child hear what it sounds like! Discuss a plan of action so your whole family knows what to do in case of a fire emergency!
Bully Awareness:
October is also Bully Awareness Month. After our Fire Safety unit we will be discussing what Bullies are, what they do, and how to deal with them. Sometimes classmates make bad choices, but we wouldn't call them a bully. We will discuss what to do, including understanding that all the adults are here to help! And there is a difference between tattling (Billy took my pencil), and reporting (Sally was pushing at recess). Let's empower our children to know how to deal with all kinds of people in a respectful manner!
