1/3/2012

Good Morning,

ALL OF THE 8TH GRADE CLASSES WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN A CLASS GEOGRAPHY BEE Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday of this week. There are 7 rounds; we will cover the first 4 rounds today and the remaining three at the beginning of the next class.

All of the Daily Vocab Terms that have been given to the students will be checked NEXT CLASS. They are posted on my classroom door and most are currently available on Classnotes just below my 12/15 note. The list is Bright Green.

All students have been strongly encouraged to read/review Chapter 2, Lessons 1 & 2 before class on Wednesday 1/4.

Students have been told that there will be a brief assessment (Quiz) on the lessons that we will be discussing in class this week; the quiz will be given after we have discussed key pieces of each lesson as a class.  It will occur  between Wednesday, 1/4 and Tuesday, 1/10. Each class will see me three times this week and once on Monday or Tuesday depending upon their rotation.

I have created this time line to allow the class discussion to help determine when each class is prepared for the quiz. The quiz is content based and is not meant to assess students ability to memorize facts, dates or specifics from the textbook. Students who review their notes and participate in the class discussion/activity will do very well on the quiz.

A NOTE FROM MRS. J- 12/15 FOR CLASSES 8-2 and 8-3

Students in 8-2 and 8-3 received their Chapter 1 Study Guide for their Chapter Exam next Thursday. We will do an in class review on Tuesday- all students must complete the SG Packet before class begins in order for us to complete the review. We will start the next unit when we return from Winter Break.

Due to a schedule change to allow for DCAS Testing today and yesterday, students in 8-3 completed the vocabulary quiz that was originally scheduled for earlier this week today. This was based on the vocabulary lists that can be found on pages 85, 92 and 109 in the Creating America Textbook.

The Vocab Quiz originally scheduled for today has be rescheduled for January 3, 2012 to allow students adequate time to prepare for next week's exam. The 1/3/12 Vocab Quiz is based off of vocabulary lists that can be found on pages 110,114,119 and 126 in the Creating America Textbook.

The RSN Assignment for Chapter 3 (lesson 3) and Chapter 4 (Lessons 2 and 3) is NOW
due onJanuary 3, 2012 as well. It was originally due on Tuesday, 12/20.

DECEMBER 7. 2011:

A NOTE FROM THE TEACHER:

Our current unit in 8th grade Social Studies involves a study of Early Mesoamerican and North American Societies. This unit will help students to understand the cultural diversity of the area that existed prior to European exploration, settlement and colonization. We are working through this unit quickly and hope to finsih it by the middle of next week and complete our unit assessment prior to Winter Break.

Students were expected to have read and sticky noted Chapter 1, Lessons 1, 2, and 5 as well as all of the lessons in Chapter 2 by this Thursday, 12/8. Each of these lessons provides a great deal of background knowledge about the people, societies, cultures, civilizations, places and events prior to the 1500's in North America. Students have been provided with several assignments and due dates for this unit and have been given adequate time to read, review and take notes for each lesson. Their notes are used to guide our dicusssions and activities in class.

I am also in the process of updating the Classnotes Page for both 7th and 8th grade Social Studies; hopefully the Resources Section on both pages will be helpful to students as they further develop their research skills and work independently on upcoming current event assignments and projects. As we work our way through different units and projects in both 7th and 8th grade, I ask students to help me further develop my list of resources so that they can learn from each other about credible resources that are available to them.

Whenever possible, I will upload new documents to my Classnotes Page that are related to the unit we are studying. These could include vocabulary lists, copies of worksheets, instructions and rubrics. Currently, there are NO new documents attached at the bottom of the page. If I update the page and attach files, I will also try to send an email making you aware of this change.

Students are encouraged to visit this page frequently, especially if they are absent to see if attachments have been added or information about upcoming assignments/assessments has been posted.

As always, if you have questions regarding assignments please do not hestiate to email me.

Mrs. Alycia Jefferson

Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies

As most of you already know, I am expecting my first child on September 7, 2011- shortly after Labor Day! My plan is to return mid-October. While I am on Maternity Leave, Mrs. Foster will be my substitute.

Mrs. Foster has participated as a parent volunteer for our Junior Achievement Economics Program for the past 4 years and is also a MOT XC Mom. Our first trimester will be focused on the 7th and 8th grade Social Studies Economics Standards. Students will be participating in lessons and activities that are included in the Junior Achievement Personal Finance Curriculum. This curriculum is very hands on and culminates with a Field Trip to JA Finance Park in November.

Permission Slips will be handed out the first week of the classes for both 7th and 8th grade. These MUST be returned by no later than September 6, 2011. Parent volunteers will be needed for each day. As a parent Volunteer, you will need to complete an online training- it is very simple and easy, but must be completed in order for us to participate. I will be looking for 9-10 parents for each grade.

In addition to receiving permission slips for the JA Field Trip the first week, students will also receive a Welcome Letter and the Policies & Procedures Contract regarding rules about participation, classwork, homework, projects and assessments as well my expectations for each students. These must be signed and will count as the first homework assignment. Students will also receive their vocabulary lists for the first 4 weeks of school as well as the due dates for each assignment and vocabulary quiz dates. Homework Assignments are NOT accepted late.

We will be organizing student binders together and/or reviewing how to organize them in the first four days of classes. Students will be expected to have the binders ready to go by no later than the end of the 4th class period. This will also be a graded assignment.

ONCE THE ABOVE LISTED DOCUMENTS HAVE BEEN HANDED OUT,  I WILL BE ATTACHING THOSE THAT ARE AVAILABLE IN PDF FORMAT TO THIS PAGE.
