"If you can read, you can learn everything about anything, and anything about everything."

                                                 --Tomie dePaola

 Welcome to the Husted Hounds!

Dear Families,

We are looking forward to our last field trip of the year coming up on May 22nd .  Thanks so much to those that attended our trip to Fort Delware.  The students seemed to really enjoy the trip.

Coverdale Farm Chaperones: Joanne Maiorano, Stephanie Evans, Steven Cerezo, Elena Willis, and Christie Watlington.

Please remember to send in your child's reading calendar at the end of each month.  The reading coordinates with the Phanatic about Reading Program information that was sent home in mid October as well as the MOT required reading.  If you need a blank calendar or information about the program, please let me know.

Mystery Readers: Our class has been enjoying mystery readers on Fridays.  These mystery readers come in and read to the class on Friday afternoons around 2:45 and read to the class a book of their choice.  Throughout the day, I provide clues for the students to see if they could figure out who is coming to read to them.  Please let me know if you are interested, and I will get you scheduled.  Remember it is a MYSTERY, so don't tell your child that you are coming.  Here are some pictures of the mystery readers that we've had so far......

Here is what we are working on this week............

For Reading we are taking a break from our reading book.  We are participating in an author study of Tomie dePaola.  Throughout the unit, we will be focusing on several of the reading skills that we have worked on throughout the year.  These skills include fantasy and reality, story elements, problem and solution, and fact and opinion.  We will be reading many of his books and  completing activities related to the books.

For Writing we are completing a piece that corrdinates with our Social Studies unit.  We are writing as investigators--sharing our thoughts and ideas about the documents and artifacts that we found in our partner's bag.

Here are some pictures of of the poetry activities.....

For Math, we are starting Unit 19 which is called Patterns in Data.  The students will be collecting and organizing data.  They will also be working with input/output machines.

For Social Studies we are starting a new unit called Trading Partners.  This unit focuses on dependence and interdependence.  The students will discover how we all depend on one another.

For Science, we finished up our Balance and Weighing unit.  Here are some picture of us exploring with balance and the scales...

We had fun ending our bridges unit.  Here are some pictures of the bridges we made....

Homework

Your child will have homework daily (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).  These sheets will be due the following day.  In addition to the daily homework, your child will have spelling and ixl homework.

At the start of each week, you child will receive a spelling contract.  He or she will complete 3 spelling activities (1 from Group A and 2 more).  This contract is to be signed by the parent, according to the directions.  The spelling contract, and all spelling homework is due on Friday.

Your child will also receive an ixl contract.  This sheet notes the skills your child should work on this week, for a total of a ½ hour.  The ixl work is to be completed and the ixl contract turned in by Monday of the following week.

Please encourage your 2nd grader to be accountable for his or her homework .  Encourage him or her to put the work in his or her folder when finished.

 Trailblazers

For Math we use the Trailblazers curriculum.  The program is mostly hands on.  It also involves problem solving and self discovery.  The strategies/methods are much different from when we were younger.  Please allow your child to show you what he/she knows.  Let them talk out their methods and proceed with the way that they know.  I ask that you do not teach them the double-digit addition and subtraction algorithm.  They will learn this method, but not before other strategies are used.  The algorithm may seem easier to you because of the way we were taught, however the methods that your children will use help them have better number sense and give them various strategies to choose from.  As they learn the various methods, they may choose the one that is most comfortable to them.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the methods your child is using.
