We're well into the 2nd trimester already & the year going by too quickly for me. Students are learning an assortment of Spanish vocabulary words in class, which is wonderful. For the lower school grades (K-5) Spanish units usually last one month (3-4 lessons). At the middle school level, the length of units varies, but I try to update ClassNotes info about once a week.

Elementary School

Kindergarten through 5th Grade

Mis Cinco Sentidos/ La Comida

This fun unit kicks off with a lesson on Mis Cinco Sentidos (my 5 senses). This lesson will be team taught in grades K-4 with Wellness. Students will learn about their senses in Spanish & will get the chance to experience learning by just using 1 or 2 of their senses. In 5th grade Spanish, we will use all five senses to learn as we listen to salsa music & smell different traditional foods such as café & canela.

During this unit, each grade level focuses on learning different vocabulary words for common food objects:
Kindergarten- queso, ensalada, pan, papa, jugo, leche, & pollo.

1st grade- queso, ensalada, pan, papa, jugo, leche, pollo, agua, sopa, carne y manzana

Ask your Kinder & 1st grade students to sing for you our “Queso Song” to the tune of “She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain”!

2nd grade- queso, ensalada, pan, papa, jugo, leche, fruta, pollo, vegetales, naranja, agua, sopa, carne, sandwich, plátano y manzana + our favaorite song “Bistec- Quiero, quiero un Bistec!”

3rd grade- queso, ensalada, pan, papa, jugo, leche, fruta, pollo, vegetales, naranja, agua, sopa, carne, sandwich, plátano y manzana + the three meals of the days

4th grade- Spanish will be team teaching healthy eating & the new USDA “Mi Plato”- My Plate food guide with Wellness. Students will learn the 5 food categories in Spanish & will create various projects using Mi Plato activities.

5th grade- Spanish will review the USDA “Mi Plato” food guidelines. Students will learn the 5 food categories in Spanish. 5th graders will explore their favorite foods in Spanish, as they create “Mi plato de Comidas Favoritas”. Students will also conduct an in-class research project on a South American Country focusing on the national dish of the country.

Notice how various commonly used words are repeated from year to year. My goal is for these words to be common knowledge for the students after a year or two of learning them.

  • To describe their Spring Break vacation plans
  • Usar el verbo Ir to tell where they’re going

In order to accomplish these goals, students will revisit

  • El verbo Gustar

  • Los adjetivos de personalidad

Students will have a quiz on the verbs Ser, Estar, & Ir on March 27.

Their written paragraph about their Spring Break plans is due on March 28.

I JUST found out that Freshlyground-- the South African band featured in Shakira's Waka Waka video-- which is our warm up song now is playing in Philadelphia TONIGHT at World Cafe Live. I wanted to pass along this information about the show, which is an all ages event just in case any students were interested in attending. There are also a few other Spanish Music shows coming up at WCL in Philly-  Philly Bloco on March 30 & Los Amigos Invisibles on April 5. These would be great shows for any 8th grader who loves Spanish music.

Los Amigos Invisibles
World Cafe Live Philadelphia
Since their first album in 1995, Los Amigos Invisibles have developed a sound based on the "gozadera" – an irresistible fusion of Latin rhythms with fiery funk and lounge music. The band got their first break when David Byrne (Talking Heads) discovered one of their albums by chance in a Manhattan record shop. He immediately called the band up in their native Venezuela and soon after, signed them to his label: Luaka Bop. Byrne opened doors for the band across the globe and Los Amigos Invisibles s ...
